Critters and Postcards
Another morning spent in the vineyard. The great thing about farming organically is witnessing first hand how little nature needs "managing." Yesterday, I noticed that gophers had been around. Today, as I was reaching through the leaves to secure a vine tie, I nearly stepped on a huge gopher snake.
Gopher snakes always make me a little nervous, as I have to get pretty close before I can distinguish them from a rattler. This snake was a little sluggish as it had just finished off the critter that was probably working out which choice vine it was going to chew through next. We also have a resident badger, bob cats, owls, eagles and coyotes. Together they successfully manage to keep the rodents at bay. I've yet to see the mountain lion that is reported to live in these parts--and I'm quite thankful for that.
