American Appellations

There's a great article, written by Roger Dial, posted at Appellation America today, highlighting the threat that mass production could pose to small wine producers, and to public awareness of the diversity of North America's winegrowing regions.

A sense of place plays a major part in my wine purchasing decisions. I like to know a little about the region, the vineyard, the producer--it's the flavor of the place that makes a wine so fascinating.

Our San Antonio Valley Zinfandel is a varietal that is not commonly grown in Monterey County, but here in this highland valley, with it's warmer climate and coastal influence, we're producing great Zins with unique and complex characteristics.

So take a closer look at America's appellations, and the small wineries who focus on producing wines with regional character; Appellation America is a great place to start.

Winemakers' Celebration Update

The weather and location were perfect for the Winemaker's Celebration yesterday. The turnout was phenomenal too.

We were exhausted at the end of the event, but very happy with how well our new releases were received. I think, out of over 40 wineries, Escafeld was the only winery pouring Zinfandel, we had a lot of zin fans stop by, but I'm not positive as we didn't have the chance to wander around and check things out once the event got underway. During setup we spent some time chatting with winemaker Annette Hoff from Cima Collina and the folks at Blackstone, but once the doors opened we were busy!

We poured our '02 and '03 Merlot and our '03 Zinfandel, and almost ran out of wine!

Thanks to everyone who came by to meet us; we also enjoyed seeing lots of familiar faces and we're looking forward to seeing you all at the next event.

Stanley Lambert '04 Full-Sister Semillon

The weather is much cooler at last. It's hard to believe that just two weeks ago we were baking. Originally hailing from the UK, I'm used to the weather being the main topic of conversation, and picking up my copy of The Sweet Life by Laura Stoddart, I came across a wonderfully appropriate quote by Charles Dudley Warner (1829-1900):
"Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it."
Can't argue with that.

Now that we have relief from the heat and veraison starting in the the Twin Vines vineyard, it's clear that harvest is creeping towards us, so we're making a point of enjoying plenty of memorable whites while the weather is still fine. A couple of nights ago we enjoyed a bottle of Stanley Lambert '04 Full-Sister Semillon from Australia's Barossa Valley. Fragrant, with gentle scents of pineapple, dates and honeydew, this wine has fresh flavors of pineapple, lemon butter, lime and soft hints of caramel. Great with seafood and the perfect compliment to a summer evening spent with a favorite book.

Veraison!

We have "veraison" in the Twin Vines vineyard. No - it's not a disease! Veraison is defined as the stage when grapes begin to gain color - red grapes that is. It happens in late summer/early fall and is a sure fire sign that harvest is not too far away. It is a sign that the internal chemistry of the grapes is turning from mostly acid to mostly sweet. As grapes develop in the vineyard, the green-acid taste (you'll know what I mean if you have ever tasted an underripe grape) diminishes as acid levels drop. At the same time, the sugar levels are rising. Harvest occurs when the sugar and acid levels are in balance - leave the grapes on the vine too long and not only will they be super sweet (which can lead to fermentation problems as the alcohol levels get too high), but the low acid levels in the grape can make the resultant wine taste "flabby" - it has no punch, and will not hold its own when served with food for example.

In the Twin Vines Vineyard, the Cabernet Sauvignon is leading the way, and the Cab vines are displaying bunches of grapes containing a mixture of green and pink. As these grapes ripen of course, they will all turn a deep purple color.

We'll be sure to take some snaps soon and post them on this site.

What would we do without wine?

Yesterday was tough. A tire blowout followed by a number of other frustrating incidents made for a challenging day--thank goodness for wine!

After a very hot and sticky afternoon on a dusty dirt road supervising a pair of wiggly pre-second grade twins, I was in need of some cool comfort, and found just the thing: a glass of Bourassa 2004 Sauvignon Blanc. The perfect summer cool down de-stresser. With it's honeyed melon and grapefruit flavors, bright minerality, and clean finish, it was a welcome lift after a hot, hectic day. I'm planning to keep a bottle on hand from now on for summertime emergencies.
